Compensating for Daylight Savings Time Changes in Haiku®

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE FOR ALL OUR STATIONS TO READ!

In a move to conserve energy, The United States has departed from the standard international approach when it comes to changes in Daylight Savings Time.

- The traditional rules for the start and stop dates of Daylight Savings Time were the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October.

- The NEW U.S. rules start Daylight Savings Time on the second Sunday in March and end it on the first Sunday in November.

Since Haiku® isn't equipped to compensate differently for the U.S. than for the rest of the world, the result for companies like ours, which sells internationally, is that we must ask our U.S. users to manually compensate a little by doing a quick manual time-zone change in your Haiku® time settings on two dates in the Fall and two dates in the Spring. It takes only a few seconds.

FALL ADJUSTMENTS...

On the last Sunday in October...

1. Click on the Haiku® Start button in the deskbar, and under Preferences, choose Time.
2. Click the Time Zone tab, and select a city in the time zone just to your east.

For example...

If you are in the Eastern Time Zone, select Halifax
If you are in the Central Time Zone, select New York
If you are in the Mountain Time Zone, Select Chicago
If you are in the Pacific Time Zone, select Denver

When the new "official" U.S. daylight time date arrives on the first Sunday in November (for 2007, it's on November 4th), reverse the process by just changing your time zone in Haiku® Time Preferences back to a city in your normal time zone.

SPRING ADJUSTMENTS

In the Spring, on the second Sunday in March, change your time zone city to one in the time zone just to your west, as follows...

If you're in the Eastern Time Zone, select Chicago
If you're in the Central Time Zone, select Denver
If you're in the Mountain Time Zone, select Los Angeles
If you're in the Pacific Time Zone, select Anchorage

Then, on the last first Sunday in April, the traditional changeover date, just revert to your normal time zone setting.

TIMEANNOUNCE DISABLING

If there will be a lag between the time you adjust your time zone, and 2 a.m. Sunday when Daylight Savings Time changes happen in Haiku®, we recommend you temporarily disable your TimeAnnounce feature. To do so, just go into TuneTracker System Prefs, and in the Time Announcement folder textbox, temporarily rename the path that leads to your Time Announcement folder by adding an underscore or other character to the end of the pathname.

If you have any questions, please call us *prior* to the expected daylight time adjustment dates.
